UK Charts: 29.09.2008

US rock band Kings Of Leon have scored an impressive UK chart double this week.

‘Sex On Fire’ notches up a third week on top of the singles chart, while parent disc Only By The Night debuts at number one on the albums chart.

The last act to top both charts simultaneously was Coldplay, who scored the first double of their career in June.

Elsewhere on the UK singles chart, Katy Perry remains at two with ‘I Kissed A Girl’, while Rihanna’s ‘Disturbia’ climbs to a new peak of three.

The highest new entries of the week come from James Morrison, who lands at seven with ‘You Give Me Something’, and Sugababes, who debut at eight with ‘Girls’, notching up their 15th top ten hit.

Meanwhile, Faith Hill’s ‘There You’ll Be’ re-enters the chart at ten after featuring on last week’s episode of The X Factor. The track originally peaked at number three in 2001.

Faith Hill might re-enter UK top 10

American singer Faith Hill is very much happy about her 2001 single “There You’ll Be” as it might re-enter the top 10 of the UK Singles Charts this Sunday. The commotion is because of a 19 year-old contestant of the hit British television counterpart of American Idol, “The X-Factor”. She sang Faith Hill’s song which peaked at #3 way back in 2001. It immediately peaked at #4 on the iTunes download chart.

Amy Connolly who is a contestant on the X-Factor managed to get Girls Aloud’s Cheryl Cole on tears after which she dedicated the song to her father who raised her single-handedly. 

The performance attracked downloaders to buy Hill’s song. Of course, this sort of thing is far from unprecented – Amy Winehouse and Christina Aguilera, among others, enjoyed similar sales boosts during last year’s X Factor, while Mint Royale’s ‘Singin’ In The Rain’ reached number one in June after a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent danced onto it.

Kings of Leon makes it 2 weeks in a row at the top with their brand new single “Sex On Fire” which is off from their latest LP titled “Only By Night” in stores in Australia last September 20 and hits UK stores September 22.

Katy Perry hangs on the second position while the Pussycat Dolls’ “When I Grow Up” climbs back to 3. 

The dolls are off to a good start as their latest LP “DOLL DOMINATION” hits stores September 22 (UK), September 23 (USA). Will they make it to #1 next week? 

McFly soars from 23 to 4 this week with their latest single “Lies” which is also off from their latest LP “Radio: Active” which hits stores also today.

Gym Class Heroes enters the top 10 with “Cookie Jar” which soars to top 6.

Notable new entries in the top 20 are: Will Young’s first single after 2 years titled “Changes” and Oscar Winner Jennifer Hudson with Spotlight” entering at 10 and 15 respectively.

Meanwhile, in the albums chart Metallica holds on to top spot preventing a possible #1 debut of Ne-Yo’s Year of the Gentleman which settles at 2. Rihanna sticks at 3 with the reloaded edition of her album.

The Cosmos Rocks, a collaboration between Queen and former Free singer Paul Rodgers, enters at five.

US four-piece band KINGS of LEON ended Katy Perry’s 5-week reign with their brand new single “Sex on Fire” which ousted Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” and landed at #2.

Cliff Richard, bidding to become the only artist to top the chart in six consecutive decades, has to settle for the number three spot with ‘Thank You For A Lifetime’.

Miley Cyrus climbs to 11 from 14 with “See You Again” and Gym Class Heroes ascends to 12 with “Cookie Jar”.

Meanwhile, in the Albums Chart, Metallica rises to top on the UK Albums Chart with their “Death Magnetic” album while Scottish rock band Glasvegas enters at #2 with their self-titled debut album. Last week’s #1 The Verve falls to #4 with their second #1 album in the UK “Forth”.

It’s not surprising that Katy Perry still wins the heart of British fans, she’s still at #1 this week with her phenomenal anthem “I Kissed A Girl” for the 5th week in a row. She’s now on the running to become the artist with the most weeks at #1 this year after Duffy claimed the current reaching #1 for 5 weeks. Katy fended Swedish DJ Eric Prydz and the Pussycat Dolls from reaching #1.

Swedish DJ Eric Prydz still remains at #2 with his piano dance anthem “Pjanoo”. The highest new entry belongs to the sizzling dolls who was in London last week to promote their spanking new album “DOLL DOMINATION”. The Pussycat Dolls entered the charts at #3 with “When I Grow Up”.

Miley Cyrus was also in the running for a top 10 spot next week after she landed 14 from 23 last week with “SEE YOU AGAIN (Rock Mafia Remix)”. Ne-Yo’s unoriginal track spends its 2nd week in the charts finding a 21 spot leap with “Miss Independent”

Meanwhile, in the albums chart THE VERVE reigns supreme for the second time with their second #1 album “Forth”. It prevented The Script from gaining a second week at #1 which rose from #3 to #2 this week.

Still in the albums chart, Michael Jackson’s latest compilation CD “King Of Pop” climbs to #3 while Rihanna’s Reloaded album gains a top 5 spot due to her “DISTURBIA” success.

Katy Perry holds on to the #1 spot this week making it her 4th straight week at #1 after just 5 weeks of charting in the UK Singles Chart. Looks like Katy’s kiss is clearly locking lips on British music buyers.

Debuting at #2 is Swedish DJ Eric Prydz with his electrifying Piano pop anthem “Pjanoo” which followed his success from 2003 and 2005 singles reaching as high as #1.

The Script falls to #4 this week while Rihanna climbs another spot with “Disturbia” which proved favourable success at #3.

Meanwhile, on the albums chart. The Verve’s latest album in over a decade debuts at #1 in the UK albums chart beating metal rock band Slipknot which settled at #2. 

The Verve’s latest LP titled “Forth” is their second #1 album after Urban Hymns which was released 1997.

Other new entries in the top ten come from late songbird Eva Cassidy, a Michael Jackson hits compilation, rapper The Game and folk-rock singer Teddy Thompson.

For the third straight week, American rising pop-star Katy Perry ruled this week’s UK Singles Charts with her worldwide smash anthem “I Kissed A Girl”. She beat the Script which were number 1 in the UK Albums Charts for the second week. 

Kid Rock slips to third with “All Summer Long” while current US #1 Rihanna ascends to the #4 spot with “Disturbia”.

Highest entry in the charts came from Scottish rock trio Biffy Clyro with “Mountains” which debuted at #10. Up and coming rock band The Automatic enters at #16 while Australian prodigy Gabriella Cilmi climbs to 33 from 91 with “Save The Lies (Good To Me)”.

Meanwhile in the albums chart, The Script dominated the bunch with their debut album for the second week in a row while Abba and Duffy remained at 2 and 3 respectively.
